Creative Soundtrack, Volume 3

April 05, 2013

I discovered La Blogotheque's Take Away Shows and, boy, have they been getting me through a lot of work sessions this week! It's an awesome music video series based in France where musicians perform in unusual places around town. Here's a few favorites.

Fleet Foxes - Blue Ridge Mountains

Bon Iver - Skinny Love

The Lumineers - Stubborn Love

Phoenix - 1901

Creative Soundtrack

March 22, 2013

Anyone who knows me knows that I love music. I'm always on the lookout for new musicians to follow and have been putting together an annual "Best Of" mix for friends for over 10 years. As a new feature on the blog, I hope to share some of my new discoveries and old favorites - the tunes I listen to during the day while I'm working in my studio. Without further adieu, my first creative soundtrack!

Langhorne Slim and The Lumineers - I Held Her In My Arms (Violent Femmes cover)

Swear and Shake - These White Walls

Shovels & Rope - Birmingham

Alabama Shakes - Always Alright

Creative Interpretations of Bob Dylan Songs

February 28, 2013

I love Bob Dylan and am so in awe of and inspired by these creative interpretations of his songs I've come across.

The first is Jason Holroyd's music video for "Like a Rolling Stone" using an overhead projector and photographic and typographic transparencies.

The second is Leandro Senna's hand-lettering stop-motion masterpiece of "Subterranean Homesick Blues." I've watched this video numerous times. Her hand-lettering is amazing!

Finally, you have to check out "Typo Dylan" - a website experience set to "It Ain't Me Babe." Watch Dylan's face appear as the lyrics are typed out on screen. Check it out here.

Weekly Doodle: Hand-Illustrated Lyrics to Benjamin Gibbard's "Bigger Than Love"

February 05, 2013

"Bigger Than Love," a song off the new album from Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service), has been stuck in my head! With the words to the song on repeat in my head, I decided to practice my hand-lettering skills with the lyrics.

Just My Type: Hand Lettering Favorites

August 06, 2012

For the most part, I prefer hand lettering the words on my cards. While there are some amazing fonts available for use and sometimes a really great font works best for a piece, nothing beats the uniqueness of hand lettering. My favorite hand lettered card I've created is the "Thanks" floral arch card. It turned out perfectly!

Some other hand lettering I've been swooning over...

I'm a big fan of singer Ryan Bingham (you may remember his songs from the film Crazy Heart). He just released a new music video that celebrates hand lettering with lyrics to the song literally being painted across the screen.

Absolutely gorgeous book cover designed by Laurie Rollitt

Playful and bold watercolor hand lettering by Chris Ballasiotes

Dana Tanamachi's chalk lettering is beyond amazing. You have to check out her portfolio of work!

Wednesday Doodle: Lyrics by The Lumineers

July 18, 2012

I stumbled upon the music of The Lumineers about a month ago and their first full-length album has quickly become my summer soundtrack. Their folk rock sound is pretty infectious - think long ballads, foot stomping, hand clapping...So for this week's doodle, I took some lyrics from their song "Ho Hey" and worked on a little hand lettering. The background is a picture from the magical Cannon Beach, Oregon, that I took last summer. Here's the original music video if you are looking for a little blog reading soundtrack.
